AEGEE-Gliwice history

AEGEE Gliwice has been working on the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice since 1992. Organization's output is so interesting and most of projects are on the regional and European area i.e.: series of lectures called „Europe of different countries” about job in Europe; conference AEGEE „Regional Meeting 2001” about „Regional identity” or last year's „Regional Meeting 2003”; „Interinfo_2001” which was a conference devoted to news publications in Internet and how to do them properly, „InterInfo_2003” about „How to use Internet technology to have effective communication in organization or corporation?”. Every year AEGEE Gliwice offer also two-week holidays for students from different European countries on „Summer University” or „Travel Summer University”. On the regional area are organized Student's Organizations Auction called TOST which are so popular with the new students.

Very begining

First days of 1989 year brought a possibility to create politically independent public organizations. In 1992 group of students from Silesian University of Technology decided to establish an organization. First meeting took place on 20 February 1992. Members of the founding committee were:

  • Andrzej Mochnacki
  • Adam Barczyk

On the founding list signed nineteen students and they decided to create a new branch of European organization AEGEE. There was picked out name „European Academic Youth Organization Gliwice-Zabrze”. That year on the 2 of April took place sitting session of the District Court in Katowice which registered organization to the judicial register.

1995-2002

„European Academic Youth Organization Gliwice-Zabrze”

Beginning of the 1995 year was the time of the important development AEGEE Gliwice-Zabrze. Appeared plans of the first projects. On the days 7-24 of August in 1995 together with AEGEE Bonn was organized summer camp „Traveling Summer University” in Bonn, Lepizig and Gliwice. That year was also a beginning of cooperation with Friedrich Ebert Foundation in which AEGEE Gliwice-Zabrze did some different projects. Then were also many meetings of members from Poland and Europe. Some of projects became serial: „Regional Meeting”, „InterInfo”, „Summer University”, „TOST - Student's Organizations Auction”

2002-2006

European Student's Forum AEGEE Gliwice

In 2002 on December was changed name of the organization because of no member from Zabrze. Actual proposition was most common because of the better translation from French name. AEGEE Gliwice took active part in promotion idea of Poland as a member of the United Europe. On the 1 May 2004 altogether was celebrated joining our country to the European structures.

AEGEE is one of the biggest interdisciplinary student associations in Europe; it is represented by 17.000 students, active in 260 academic cities, in 42 countries all around Europe, which presents amazing culture variety. AEGEE is a secular, non-profit organization, not linked to any political party. All projects and activities are based on voluntarily work of its members.

  • to foster democracy, human rights, tolerance, cross-boarder co-operation, mobility and European dimension in education

Structure

In order to really promote international co-operation and avoid creating any physical or mental borders AEGEE does not recognize any national level or national administration in its unique organizational structure, which is based on:

  • Local level - where people from the 260 autonomic AEGEE locals directly implement AEGEE aims in a way that serves best the needs of their local community
  • European level - which gives the great common frame and direction for all local activities and provides a platform for international co-operation in multicultural teams

Members from local level can directly get involved in the European Working Groups, Project Teams and Commissions.

Last but not least, AEGEE is made of incredibly motivated young people, who work for what they believe in. In return they get personal satisfaction from making influence on the world around and gather experience, which enriches their whole life. The dream of Europe without borders has inspired and continues to inspire generations of students from the Caucasus to the Atlantic shores and makes AEGEE permanently developing.
